The Revolution Will Not Give Your Mouth Sex Appeal

Here's a little movie my Parsons Flash for Film and Video class made as a lip-synch exercise. None of these students had ever animated lip-synch before, so please cut them some slack - this whole movie was made in under an hour. In another class we worked on animating text in Flash, and the resulting end credits were also produced in under an hour. The song is Gil Scott-Heron's classic, "The Revolution Will Not be Televised," which none of my students had ever heard before (am I that old now?), so I like to think it gave 'em some cultural education too. Those lyrics impress on me just how much "the media" has changed since 1988. Thank you, internets!

New Sita short at Tribeca Film Festival

The new episode is called "Banishment!" and it will appear in the Animated New York program curated by Bill Plympton:
Mon, May 1 / 9:00 pm
Museum of Jewish Heritage

Wed, May 3 / 12:30 pm
AMC Loews Village VII 3

Thu, May 4 / 1:00 pm
AMC Loews 34th Street 9

Sun, May 7 / 10:15 am
AMC Loews Lincoln Sq 6

Unfortunately I have to miss all four screenings, because I'll be in Stuttgart.

And in fact there's another Sita episode, "Grief and Birth," which I just finished last night
in which Sita, abandoned on the banks of the Ganges, is found by sage Valmiki who escorts her to his ashram where she gives birth to Luv and Kush. I can't afford the bandwidth to post these clips online (there are now 4 episodes I haven't posted, out of 8 completed so far) but you can see stills here.

Wow

I got a Guggenheim Fellowship for Sita Sings the Blues. I am beyond grateful. It's still sinking in. Thank you, Guggenheim Foundation!

Sita Sings the Blues at Bushfield

Bushfield College instructor Nigel McDougall emailed me a while back and asked me to send a DVD of the Sita Sings the Blues work-in-progress to show his young students, whom he was teaching about the Ramayana. Then yesterday he sent me a link to these pictures. Pretty cool - the whole Ramayana told in English kids' drawings!
